A friend of mine tells me the computer on my Cadillac is set up for premium unleaded gas. I am using low octane unleaded. My friend says that my mileage is incorrect by about 3 miles a gallon is this correct? My gasoline mileage on my Cadillac tells me I am getting 25 miles a gallon.?Your friend is talking out his butt.My gasoline mileage on my Cadillac tells me I am getting 25 miles a gallon.?
He's wrong.
The computer in the car calculates MPG by observing how much air is being taken in and how much fuel it is delivering. Since there is parasitic loss and drag that the computer cannot sense, your real mileage will be a little less.
Next time you fill up, reset the trip meter. When you fill up after that, note the mileage on the trip meter and how much gas you just put in. Divide the miles by gallons and youhave your true fuel economy. This works best if you use the same gas station and pump both times.
Oh, you are fine using regular unleaded. Higher ocatne fuels are only for high compression or forced induction engines, which your Caddy is not.My gasoline mileage on my Cadillac tells me I am getting 25 miles a gallon.?Your friend is wrong.
Octane does NOT measure energy content. It only measure resistance to self-ignition (from high compression)

But your computer may be off (as it is making an estimate). But it would be off for both regular and premium gas.
Good luck...
P.S. I have an Audi A4 - and I also have a MPG computer. My gasoline mileage on my Cadillac tells me I am getting 25 miles a gallon.?
25 MPG sounds pretty good for a caddy. Unless your engine is making any knocking or pinging noises, you're just fine using regular fuel.My gasoline mileage on my Cadillac tells me I am getting 25 miles a gallon.?out his a** indeed
